MARY KLAREN
My Story
I started my first business at 15. Back then, I was the photographer and writer for my school paper, always carrying a camera. A friend asked if I could take their senior photos, and soon, more friends asked. Then came weddings, then family portraits. By 16, I had graduated high school early with a journalism scholarship and a full-time photography business.
I was ready to grow my business, but I couldn’t afford to hire a web designer, so I taught myself how to build a website. My clients noticed, loved it, and started asking me to build theirs. Then they needed business cards. Then logos. And before I knew it, I had built a branding agency without even realizing it.
I loved the creative side, but the logistics? That was a different story. Juggling multiple clients, missing deadlines, losing files—it all became overwhelming. I was giving terrible customer service without even realizing it because I was missing social cues. I later found out why.
A series of medical crises forced me to stop. A bad reaction to over-the-counter medication put me in the ER. At the same time, I was unknowingly living in a house with black mold. My body shut down—chronic pain, memory issues, heart problems. While shooting a wedding, I passed out. I knew I had to step away. What followed was what I now know as an autistic shutdown—complete exhaustion, burnout, depression.
During that time, I was diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Suddenly, everything made sense. Why my body hurt so much. Why my business wasn’t growing the way I wanted. Why I was constantly burning out.
So, I took the time to learn. I studied business strategies through the lens of neurodivergence, researched the unique challenges neurodivergent entrepreneurs face, learned new software, went to therapy, and built systems that actually worked for my brain. When I relaunched, I sold out my branding services within a month—at the luxury price point I needed to support both my family and my health. That momentum led to an opportunity in tech sales, where I became an Account Executive at Dell Technologies, all while running Studio Klaren.
The Studio Klaren Philosophy
I know what it’s like to have a million ideas and want to pursue them all. I’ve launched a print magazine (funded by a successful Kickstarter), created a handmade jewelry line, designed coffee shops and cocktail lounges, painted murals, shot weddings in Irish castles and Mexican beaches, and designed branding that’s been featured in Whole Foods and The Travel Channel. I’ve also run a farm with 200 chickens, goats, pigs, and a full garden- while homeschooling three kids during a pandemic.
I’ve been that entrepreneur with the big vision and the messy execution. Before I got sick, my businesses worked—but barely. I was trying to run them like a neurotypical. Now, I run my business in a way that actually works for me.
I’ve built tools using AI to streamline my work—custom ChatGPTs for SEO, finances, content creation, and ads. Client management workflows smooth as butter using Honeybook, automated email marketing through Flodesk… I’ve mastered Notion to create a "second brain," replacing the endless cycle of buying planners that never actually helped. I’ve learned when to grind and when to rest, when to jump and when to wait.
I also know what it’s like to have no one believe in you. To hear, "Another business idea?" or "You’re rebranding again?" To see the eye rolls. And I know the satisfaction of those same people coming back to say, "Congratulations."
Studio Klaren exists for entrepreneurs who think differently. Who’ve been told they’re “too much” or “all over the place.” Who know they have something brilliant to offer but need a brand and business structure that actually supports the way their brain works.
If that sounds like you, welcome. You’re in the right place.
